Happy Sixth Birthday Mr. Pickles

I truly can't believe we have a six year old. It seems like time has passed so quickly. At six years old Wyatt has blossomed in to such a sweet boy. He is amazingly sensitive and has developed a true sense of empathy for other people and animals. In fact, a few weeks ago when he realized that he was eating "animals that were alive" he decided to go veggie because "we don't kill animals to eat them, it's not nice." When I tried to explain that we can be thankful to the animals for giving us food and nutrition he replied, "But they didnt want to, they didn't want to die." And well, he's right. Now, three weeks later, he is still sticking to it, making it that much more difficult to find stuff that he will eat!

He loves watching shows about animals and his favorite show right now is Wild Kratts, about two Zoologist brothers who transform in to animals and demonstrate "creature powers." He and Malcolm frequently transform in to the Kratt brothers themselves...like tonight in the bathtub. Wyatt spends hours drawing pictures of the Wild Kratts and their animal friends.

He also loves his own pet, Max the cat, and he is a big helper when it comes to feeding and changing Max's water.

Wyatt loves his kindergarten class and has a great group of friends who are boys that he hangs with - Luca (his BFF and the apparent class clown, frequently hug in the morning when they see each other) Sam, Ben, Leo, Jake, Felix, Kyle, Lucas. And of course there is his buddy Julia in his class who he pals around with too.

His teacher says he is a joy to have in the classroom, he listens, he follows directions, he is eager to learn and he tries very hard. For the most part, he does all of that around the house too.

He has learned to tie his shoes, but prefers to wear slip ons or velcro. He has learned to read and has gotten through the first two BOB books sets. He is spelling words and writing sentences phonetically.

We are so proud of our little bear!

Here are a few of Wyatt's favorites at six year's old:
Movie - Kung Fu Panda
Show - Wild Kratts
Animal - gosh, so many of them, but he is still really impressed with all sea creatures especially sharks and whales
Song - Dynomite by T. Cruz
Sport - Baseball, he is on a T-ball team now and loves it
Toy - loves setting up magna tile buildings and playing with little lego men, knights and animals inside
Game - Kids on Stage (charades)
Book - LOVES The Magic Treehouse Series, especially the Knight book, Also loves The Kings Three Wishes, a book that was Jason's as a kid
Food - Pizza

Play Date with Brandon

Malcolm has had many play dates. But, being the younger brother means that his play dates are often with the younger sibling of someone that Wyatt is friends with. On this day Malcolm had a play date of his own with a little boy from his preschool, Brandon. He was very proud to have his own friend over.

Year of the Dragon

Malcolm's preschool, Happy Times, celebrated Chinese New Year with a parade and party. All the kids lined up in the dragon and paraded around the outside play space with little drums. Very cute!

Your Turn

The other day I could hear Malcolm and Wyatt in my bedroom playing so nicely together. I couldn't hear exactly what was going on but there was lots of giggles and lots of, "OK, now its your turn. OK. Giggle giggle giggle. Here, now you can have a turn." Well, it went on for a while and when I finally went in it turns out they were using my phone to take pictures of each other's "butts." I should've have known since peaceful playing usually means something is up. It was all pretty cute and innocent. Here is a photo of Moosey posing for one of the shots Wyatt took.

K-107 Goes to the Symphony

Jason was one of the parents lucky enough to have his name drawn to get to chaperone the K-107 field trip to the symphony. Yes, its true, there were so many parents that wanted to go that Mr. Draven actually asked the principal to draw names out of a hat! The kids took the N judah train to civic center, had a picnic lunch and played at the playground near City Hall, and then attended a kids show at the symphony. I heard stories of a lost tooth, a skinned knee, a child who was temporarily grouped with another class at the symphony that day and much other very fun five and six year old shenangians along the way.

Wild Animals

We went to the zoo with some friends from the hood, Nico, Luca, and Sam. It was exhausting chasing five little boys around the zoo and the three parents doing so could barely keep up with them. At any given moment someone had run off to look at something. But all survived and had a great time.
